Microsoft Revamps Windows 10’s Icons

The icons now obey the Microsoft Fluent Design style and could be one of many changes for the upcoming Sun Valley revamp.

If you think Windows 10 could do with a new lick of paint, here’s some good news for you. Microsoft has just pushed an icon revamp onto the Insider build, and if things go well, they should also appear on the main branch soon enough.

Microsoft’s Plans for Windows 10’s Icons

Microsoft announced the update on the Windows Insider Blog. The icons are part of the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21327, which people on the Insider Dev channel can download and use rightaway.

The update comes with some brand new system icons. Microsoft is bringing these icons up to speed with what it calls the “Microsoft Fluent Design style.” To achieve this, Microsoft is introducing a new font called Segoe Fluent Icons, and everything that used the old Segoe MDL2 icons will see these shiny new ones instead.

The system icons aren’t the only assets getting a touch-up. Microsoft is also adding a splash of color to the News and Interests window too. Instead of cutting off the news image with a solid gray box, the colors from the image “leak” down into the headline.

A Small Sign of Things to Come?

It’s always nice when a company takes the time to modernize its aging operating system, but this update may be more than just a simple touch-up. It may be another small step towards giving Windows 10 its big “Sun Valley” revamp.

Sun Valley is the codename of a huge Windows 10 visual revamp that is currently in the works. We don’t know a huge amount of information about this update. Still, Microsoft is drip-feeding its users with smaller enhancements that bring the operating system up to Sun Valley standards.

For instance, it wasn’t long ago that we saw a new Sun Valley clock and alarm app arrive on the Insider build. As such, there’s a good chance that Microsoft doesn’t want Sun Valley to be a big sweeping change that happens all at once. Instead, the company seems to prefer a slow rollout to get people acclimatized to the changes.

Are These New Icons a Sign of Something More?

New icons are always a nice addition, but this particular update may be the beginning of some sweeping changes for Windows 10. With Sun Valley rising over the horizon, these icons may be a sign of what’s to come in the future.

If you’re a Windows fan, you’re going to want to keep your eyes on the operating system in the coming months. A renowned Microsoft leaker has already hinted that “the new Windows” will arrive soon, and we’re still unsure as to what they meant exactly.
