Here’s how to turn off your PlayStation 5, using both the quick menu on the system and the hardware buttons on the console.

Not sure how to turn off your PS5? You’re not alone. In the same way it was when the PS4 was new, some PlayStation 5 owners are confused at how to turn off their console.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult once you know what to do. We’ll explain how to turn off your PS5 easily.

Turning Off Your PS5 vs. Rest Mode

You should know that turning off your PS5 is actually only one of its power options. The PlayStation 5 can also go into Rest Mode, which is a low-power state like putting your computer to sleep.

In Rest Mode, depending on your system settings, the PS5 can charge your controllers, download software and game updates, and install games that you purchase from the PlayStation Store on your phone or computer. Your console’s lighting turns orange while in Rest Mode.

When in Rest Mode, your PS5 is still turned on, so you shouldn’t disconnect the power cable without fully turning it off first. When your PS5 is turned off, it doesn’t use any power, so you can unplug it without worry.

How to Turn Your PS5 Off

When you want to completely power down your PlayStation 5, here’s what to do:

  1. Press the PlayStation button on your controller to open the quick menu, which appears at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Scroll over to the Power icon, which is at the far right of the menu.
  3. Press X with that icon highlighted to open the power menu.
  4. Choose Turn Off PS5 to shut the console down. If you’re planning to turn it right back on, you can use Restart PS5 instead.

Turning off your PlayStation 5 will close all running games, so make sure you’ve saved your progress before doing this. As your PS5 shuts down, the lights on the console will blink, then turn off when it’s fully powered off. At that point, you can then safely disconnect the power cable.

If you prefer, you can also turn off the PS5 using the button on the front of the console. Locate the Power button, which is a black button near the bottom of the system’s glossy black panel. If you have the standard PS5, the button is below the Eject button for the disc drive. On the Digital Edition of the PS5, it’s the only button.

Press and hold this button until you hear two beeps to shut down your PS5. If you press and release the button after one beep, it will put your system into Rest Mode instead.
