How to Check BitLocker’s Status in Windows 10

BitLocker is a built-in Windows tool that helps protect your files. You can use it to keep your important files from hackers if they try to remotely access them. Furthermore, even if someone physically removes the drive from your computer, BitLocker still protects your data.

In this article, we will show you 4 ways you can check BitLocker status on your Windows 10 computer.

1. Check BitLocker’s Status With File Explorer

Using File Explorer is the easiest way to check if your files are encrypted. Here is how you can do it:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Head to This PC.
  3. Select the drive you want to check.
  4. Open the View menu and select Details pane.

2. Check BitLocker’s Status With Control Panel

Using the Control Panel is another fast and easy-to-use method to check if your drives are encrypted. Here is how you can do it:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Head to View by and select Large icons or Small icons.
  3. Click BitLocker Drive Encryption.

3. Check BitLocker’s Status With the Command Prompt

If you want to check out the used algorithm or if BitLocker is currently encrypting or decrypting your files, you need a Command Prompt line.

  1. In the Start menu search bar, search for command prompt and select Run as administrator.
  2. Type manage-bde -status to check the status for all drives.
  3. Press Enter.

Note: If you want to check the BitLocker status for a specific drive, type manage-bde -status :. So if you want to check the status for your (C:) drive, use the manage-bde -status C: command.

4. Check BitLocker’s Status With PowerShell

If you need more info about BitLocker, you can also use PowerShell.

  1. Input powershell in the Start menu search bar and click Run as administrator.
  2. Type Get-BitLockerVolume.
  3. Press Enter.

PowerShell will display the status for all drives. If you want to check a specific drive’s status, type Get-BitLockerVolume -MountPoint :.
